Black Knights, Inc. #2
In Rides Trouble by Julie Ann Walker
Julie Ann Walker is setting a rep for herself. In only her second novel, I recognize her witty humor, spot-on, I-know-exactly-what-she's-talking-about descriptions and her mastery of all things 'urban culture'.
In Rides Trouble was a huge success for me and held straight up to it's predecessor Hell on Wheels, the story of sexy Nate "Ghost" Weller and sweet Ali Morgan. In Rides Trouble is all about Frank "Boss" Knight - the head of Black Knights, Inc. and Rebecca "Rebel" Reichert - as we'd glimpsed in Hell on Wheels.
As per usual - all the characters were perfectly rounded with specific personalities and unique characteristics that made each stand out as her/his own person. Frank was... well... what a hottie! Frank was sexy and super-bad and fit Becky perfectly. Becky, of course, was a little dynamo. Both characters made for pretty exciting reading and, even in all that, their tenderness was crystal-clear and I could almost feel Frank's indecision over maintaining his distance coming off the pages.
Unfortunately, though, I had started reading Rev it Up before realizing it was part of a series, so the little deception in this particular book over a certain character was pointless to me - which indicated that the series isn't very friendly for persons who want to read it out of sequence. While we're on the negatives I, again, felt like the POVs were a bit cluttered - we had Sharif, Billy, Eve, Frank and Becky. I loved Billy and Eve but I felt a little(a lot) bummed that it was just a prelude - it was written more like a soon-to-be-concluded subplot than a teaser for some far-off book. Fortunately, JW did an excellent job of Vanessa and Rock in Rev it Up (review coming soon), so I got over it.
In Rides Trouble is a very enticing read that will satisfy anyone who is looking for a Thriller, Romance and, even better, both.
