Fool's Gold #8
Summer Nights by Susan Mallery
Another great book from my favorite never-ending series, Fool's Gold.
I don't usually go for the 'cowboy' books, but it's Susan Mallery, whom I keep up with, so what the heck? Turns out she may have converted me with, possibly, her cutest premise so far. The book itself wasn't the best, I'll leave that to Only Yours or another I'm not remembering now, but I think Summer Nights was fair competition.
Unlike Summer Days, which was still good, mind you, all the characters were very likable and consistent - even May, who annoyed me a little in Summer Days. Shane was macho with a gruff appeal, which suited Annabelle's girly personality (which was great, I half fell in love with her myself). With all the characters well-rounded, the romance was uber cute and unwound slowly, though the passion was quick and sizzling, which I liked; I was laughing out loud all over the place and feeling fluttery sensations in my heart when they were picking out fixtures together and saying things like 'Miss you.' in texts. Oh boy, I'll leave readers to discover the love-making scenes by themselves but, I'll say - they were hot. I usually find myself skipping through substories that are totally detached from the main characters or don't conclude in some way by the end of the book, but I found myself very interested in Charlie's story and now I'm practically counting the days until I can read her book. The end was predictable due to Susan Mallery's reuse of that particular recurring ending, but I get it - Lynne Graham has her reuse of animals, Anne Stuart and Lori Foster have their love of mystery and violence and Susan Mallery has her... Well, you can read it (Constant Mallery readers will know).
All in all, I loved the book. There's always room for improvement - it wasn't as memorable as it could have been and I don't think there was any purpose in Annabelle's ex's visit. Still, I'd give Summer Nights four stars and I can't wait for the next book.

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery's newest Fool's Gold story proves that wild hearts cannot be tamed... Horse whisperer Shane Stryker is done with passion. This time around, he's determined to meet someone who will be content with the quiet life of a rancher's wife. And the fiery, pint-size redhead who dazzles him at the local bar definitely does not fit the bill. Small-town librarian Annabelle Weiss has always seen herself as more of a sweetheart than a siren, so she can't understand why Shane keeps pushing her away. Shane has formed the totally wrong impression of her but only he can help her with a special event for the next Fool's Gold festival. And maybe while he's at it, she can convince him to teach her a few things about kissing on hot summer nights, too-some lessons, a girl shouldn't learn from reading a book!
