Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood
3.5 stars.
When Olivia went for a job interview over lunch, I don't think she ever anticipated meeting the super-sexy Grayson Kincaid or all the epic events that follow.
Olivia was probably the perfect example of a strong heroine. After being diagnosed with cancer at a very young age, she undergoes rigorous chemo treatments - with only her aunt and her fellow Pips as support, but remains smart and does not let the experience bitter her. I loved the way Julie Garwood wrote her characters - all were well-defined in their own personalities and never slipped into stereotypes or did anything unfitting. Sweet Talk was very funny and Olivia's light relationship with Grayson was uber-cute, especially when topped off by her relationship with Henry, Grayson's nephew/adopted son(sort of).
Now - why this book didn't make the top of my list. I did like Olivia and I loved Grayson, but I didn't connect with them as much as I could have. I think that is because, in part, the writing was a bit cold - detached, I suppose. All of it was a little formal and, in addition, the scenes were cut a tad bit short so I never really got to fully engage myself in any single chapter. On top of that the mystery was supposed to be the main focus (other than the romance, of course) and I somehow felt that it was a bit washed out - it wasn't highlighted enough to have me on the edge of my seat or to add that deep thrill, but it wasn't toned down enough to be a real sub-plot.
With all that, though, it was still a decent book - just not the best. I loved Ronan and I especially loved the sparks that flew at the end with Collins (I mean - sparks that came off of the pages). Unfortunately, Julie Garwood hasn't mapped any book for the Pips out, yet, but we'll always see what the future holds.
